Situation: Intermittent 502 Bad Gateway errors were occurring on our payment gateway integration once every few thousand requests, but they never reproduced in staging or local environments.
Task: I took ownership of isolating this rare non-deterministic bug that directly affected transaction completion and revenue capture.
Action: I formulated testable hypotheses: network socket timeouts, connection pool exhaustion, or TLS handshake renegotiation. I added detailed trace logging around our outbound HTTP client and instrumented TCP socket lifecycle metrics. Analyzing the packet logs during the next occurrence revealed that the remote payment server was closing idle keep-alive connections after sixty seconds, while our client connection pool kept sockets alive for ninety seconds, creating a race condition where our client wrote requests onto half-closed sockets. I adjusted our client keep-alive timeout to fifty-five seconds and configured an automated retry on idempotent socket reset errors.
Result: The intermittent 502 errors dropped to zero across hundreds of thousands of subsequent transactions. I documented the keep-alive race condition in our internal engineering playbook to prevent similar issues across our other microservices.
